LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Teresa Williamson finished second and the women's cross country team placed seventh out of 38 teams in the Blue Race at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic. On the men's side, the squad finished 22nd out of 42 and posted four personal bests.
Â
"We had a solid day in Louisville with 10 personal bests between the two squads," said cross country coach Mackenzie Wartenberger.
Â
Williamson, who ran a sub-18:00 minute 5K for the first time cruised through the future site of the 2014 NCAA Regionals (E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park) with a time of 17:43.85. Red-shirt senior Katie Hickey and senior Madeline Thomas broke the 19-minute barrier, charting personal bests of 18:56.82 and 18:57.52.
Â
" I am extremely impressed and proud of the runs from the ladies today," said Wartenberger. "We had three sub-19 5Ks, which is a first for this group. Teresa had a very strong second place finish, which was exciting."
Â
Sophomores Malina Richardson and Courtney Rice, along with freshman Cailyn Lavigne added personal bests.
Â
Freshman Brady Guertin was the top Highlander on the men's side, churning out a personal best 26:13.41 over the 8K course. Sophomore Chaz Porter, freshman Jacob Black and junior Harrison Murn joined Guertin with career-best times. The men were grouped within 54 seconds from the first finisher to their sixth.
Â
"The men got caught up in a big field and did not run to the level that they expect of themselves competition-wise," Wartenberger commented. "This is a great group, so I know they'll get there."
Â
The Highlanders return to action on Friday, Oct. 17 at the Cross Country Only National Invitational hosted by University of Richmond.
