
School Record Highlights Indoor Track & Field Season Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Raschad Kelso's (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) 60m school record, five top finishes among collegiate competitors on the men's side, and a pair of first place spots on the women's side highlighted the indoor season opener for the Radford track and field team on Thursday at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational.
Kelso set the new school mark with a time of 6.91 in the preliminaries of the 60m dash, eclipsing the previous program best of 6.92 set on Feb. 26, 2006 by Quentin Preston at the Big South Championships.
In men's competition, the Highlander 4x400 relay team clocked a time of 3:21.42 to pace the field. Among collegiate attached athletes, top finishers in track events included redshirt senior Joel Hanlon's (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) time of 4:27.62 in the mile run while sophomore Bryan Wallace (Millers Tavern, Va./Essex) clocked 8.62 in the 60m hurdles. In throws competiton, freshman Justin Smith (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) topped the field of collegiate athletes with a toss of 15.88m (52'1.5) in shot put, while senior Matt Dobson's (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) personal-best throw of 16.87m (55'4.25) in the weight throw led collegiate athletes.
For the Radford women, senior Shemelia Brandon (Alton, Va./Halifax Co.) notched a time of 25.73 to lead the way in the 200m dash, standing out in track events for the Highlanders. In the field, freshman Aimee Veatch (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) hit an Invitational-best distance of 15.13m (49'7.75) in weight throw competition.
