RADFORD, Va. – The Radford University swimming and diving team captured five first-place finishes, but couldn't pull it all together in the end against Randolph-Macon, as they fell 137-121 Friday night at the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
With the loss the Highlanders fall to 0-2 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 1-0.
“While a loss is never easy to swallow, I am extremely proud of our girls and the way that they competed hard in every race,” commented head coach Randy Jarman.
Freshman Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) turned in a stellar performance, as she won the 100-yard breaststroke,100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Turner wasn't the only Highlander to record a first-place finish. Colleen Miller (Kent Island, Md./Archbishop Spalding) snared her first win of her collegiate career in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.63, while sophomore Whitney Friend (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) reached the wall first ahead of Randolph-Macon's Tracy Spurrier in the 200-yard backstroke.
“In a meet like this where every point counts, we had girls gutting it out for fourth and fifth place,” said Jarman.
Senior co-captain Erica Kappert (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke behind her teammate Miller to help the Highlanders to a one-two finish. Along with a second place in the 100-yard backstroke, Kappert captured second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.97.
“I felt like we took a large step forward from last weekend in a sense that our girls let the excitement elevate them rather stiffle,” said Jarman.
The Highlanders will back in action Oct. 31 at noon when they face in-state rival James Madison.
