Coles Posts Second Straight Sub-Par Round to Place 2nd Individually

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Radford fired a school-record and tournament-low 285 (-3) in its final round to finish the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate in second place out of 24 teams Sunday at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa.
In addition to the Highlanders trimming 16 strokes off their opening round 301, which put them in ninth after day one, senior Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School) finished the 12th annual event in a tie for second place with a 36-hole total of three-under 141 (71-70).
Along with shattering its previous 18-hole record, Radford's 36-hole total of 586 is also a new team record.
“I'm extremely proud of how we performed this weekend,” commented Radford head coach Jeff Beeler. “Our goal is to improve as a team and individually each time we put a tee in the ground and I feel we've done that through two fall events.”
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) and Kirsty Condon (Lincolnshire, England / Kesteven and Sleaford) both shot one-over 73 for the Highlanders today, while Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) turned in another solid round, posting a six-over 78.
“I knew this team had these kind of scores in them, I just didn't expect it this early in the season,” Beeler said.
Jacksonville State, which entered the final day with a five-stroke lead over Bowling Green, recorded its second straight 289 to capture the team title. Elon and host Western Carolina finished two back of Radford in a tie for third.
UAB's Jaime Ritter carded a four-under 140 to claim the individual title, edging Coles and Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell.
Radford will enjoy a two-week break before returning to the course at the Winthrop Fall Tournament Oct. 2-3 in Rock Hill, S.C.
