CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Radford fell to No. 66 Cornell, 4-3, in non-conference men's tennis action Sunday morning at the Boyd Tinsley Courts.
With the doubles portion tied at one match each and the Highlander duo of
Joe Mills (England / Cardinal Newman Catholic) and
Stijn Meulemans (Belgium / KA2 sportschool Hasselt) up 7-5 and serving for the team point on court two, Cornell's Andy Gauthier and Jeremy Feldman rallied back to put their club up, 1-0.
Trailing 1-0, Radford got back in the match with straight-set singles wins from No. 48
Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia / Oroslavje Secondary School) and
Nicholas Sayer (Fareham, England / Cams Hill School) to take its first lead, 2-1.
After Cornell's Jonathan Jaklitsch tied the score 2-2,
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia / Birotechnika Grammar School) put the Highlanders one win away from finishing off the comeback with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the final singles position.
Victories from No. 5 Evan Bernstein (6-4, 7-5) and No. 3 Mirza Klis (7-5, 3-6, 6-4) clinched the match for the Big Red.
The Highlanders' lone doubles victory improved Salec and
Thomas Dehaen (Zwevegem, Belgium / Middenjury) to 20-1 as a tandem.
Radford will enjoy a lengthy break before returning to action at Maryland on Feb. 19.
