
SAYER FALLS TO SARMIENTO IN OPENING ROUND OF NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

ATHENS, Ga. – Nicholas Sayer's impressive 2011-12 campaign came to an end Wednesday evening as the Big South Player of the Year fell to No. 25 Ray Sarmiento of USC, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championships at The Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
A native of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Sayer led the Highlanders with a 29-12 record at the top singles position this season. Named Player of the Week four times in 2012, Sayer has a career record of 59-18, which includes an upset of then-No. 9 Jose Hernandez of North Carolina during the fall.
Earlier this season, Sayer climbed to as high as 62nd in the National Rankings before entering the NCAA Tournament ranked 120th.
This year marked the seventh straight season a Highlander has been selected to take part in the NCAA Championships.
Sarmiento, who helped the Trojans win their fourth straight National Championship last night, advances to the round of 32 and will face No. 2 Mitchell Frank (Virginia) tomorrow.
