RADFORD, Va. – Radford swimming & diving put in a strong performance on day two of Highlander Invitational, Friday at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. The Highlanders gained significant ground on second-place Mount St. Mary's, trailing the Mountaineers by 45 points and pulled away from UNC Asheville, leading the Bulldogs by 126 points

Radford set four more top-10 times and senior Jessica Frazelle (pictured) and junior Claire Doherty registered runner up finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, respectively. Both improved on their prelim times as Frazelle broke 1:00.00 for the first time this season.

They also finished just ahead of their teammates as Doherty out touched sophomore Sarah Fredericksen by .06 seconds and Frazelle topped freshman Laura Bradley by .44 seconds. Bradley, who posted a personal best in the prelim with a 1:00.32, finished with a 1:00.38 in the final, nearly taking three seconds off her previous best.

A total of four freshmen recorded top-10 times on the second day of competition. Marinda Kitchen and Bradley joined the top-10 lists in the 400 individual medley (1:00.01) and 100 backstroke setting the sixth fastest times in the program annals. Kitchen also posted a personal best 2:02.92 as the leadoff for the 800 freestyle relay B squad.

Lindsey Anderson and Elena Acevedo improved on their rankings moving in the sixth and seventh in the 400 IM (4:48.58) and 200 freestyle (1:58.86), respectively. In a competitive 200 freestyle "B" final, Acevedo was edged at the wall by .22 seconds posting her first sub-2:00.00 time, while Anderson finished sixth in the "A" final of her event.

Senior Haley Schweitzer added a fifth and an eighth in the 400 IM and 100 breaststroke, while sophomore Mary Flinn turned in a sixth and an eighth in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle, respectively.

Radford put in a positive showing in the morning trials as 16 Highlanders qualified to swim at night, which included three Highlanders in the "A" finals of the 400 IM (4,6,8), 100 Butterfly (1,2,8) and 100 backstroke (2,3,4) and at least one swimmer in the championship race. Fredericksen and Doherty won their respective heats to claim the top two spots in the fly.

Flinn, Bradley and Frazelle finished less than a second apart with Flinn winning her heat. Flinn and Schweitzer earned two "A" finals appearances. Anderson and Kitchen, who put in personal bests and top-10 times in the IM (4:52.24) and butterfly (1:00.63), qualified sixth and eighth in their respective events.

The evening opened with a fourth and a fifth in the 200 medley squads finishing within a half second of each other. The "B" team of Bradley, freshman Madeline Schouten, Doherty and Frazelle set a season-best with a 1:52.63 to its heat, but the "A" team of Flinn, Schweitzer, Fredericksen and Smith edged them for fourth posting a second straight season best.
