ITHACA, N.Y. – After edging Radford for the doubles point, No. 62 Cornell claimed the first three singles matches to earn a 4-0 victory over the Highlanders in nonconference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center.
"We knew coming in this was going to be a great test and a great opportunity for our program," head coach Mike Anderson said. "Cornell is a strong team that returned everyone from last year's squad. On our side of things, we have three freshmen who are transitioning to Division I tennis. Being their first time in a hostile environment, I expected to see some nerves. We are disappointed in the result, but know this level of competition is going to put us in position to play our best tennis down the road."
Nicholas Sayer and Patrick O'Keefe kicked off the afternoon on a good note for Radford (0-1) by prevailing, 6-2, on court one over Jason Luu and Chris Vrabel of the Big Red (2-1). Alex Sidney and Bernardo Casares Rosa answered for Cornell at No. 2, dealing a 6-2 defeat to the Highlanders' freshmen duo of Janken Thoen and Aymeric Autones.
The doubles point was decided on court three in a thrilling match, which went to a tiebreaker. Quoc-Daniel Nguyen and Stefan Vinti were able to outlast Joe Mills and Nico Ascarrunz, 7-3, in the tiebreaker to secure the 1-0 edge for the Big Red entering singles play.
Cornell claimed victories on courts 1, 6 and 4 to end the dual, and was up a set in the remaining three decisions.
Looking to level its record, RU ventures to Hanover, N.H. to play 64th-ranked Dartmouth, Saturday. First serve against the Big Green is set for 5 p.m. at the Boss Tennis Center.
