ORLANDO, Fla. – The Radford women's tennis team swept its opponent for the first time this season, dealing previously unbeaten Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute a 7-0 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Star Island Resort.
With their second straight win, the Highlanders move to 3-6 on the season. RPI drops to 6-1 through its first seven matches.
Once again, Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver got RU on the right track by winning their doubles bout on court two against Amanda Alexander and Kelsey Ham, 8-0. Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls clinched the 1-0 advantage for the Highlanders when they dispatched Casey Olson and Emily Laurillard, 8-2, at the top flight.
Taylor Fay and Gisela Garcia won their first match of the season at the third position, cruising to an 8-2 win over Christina Ciamarra and Jessica Buckley.
Napolitano was the first to finish in singles, delivering a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ciamarra at the third spot. Sarver increased Radford's advantage to 3-0 when she beat Alexander (6-1, 6-1) on court four.
Improving her team-best record to 4-3 in duals, Garcia sealed the match for the Highlanders by downing Ham (6-0, 6-1) at the fifth flight. Valls, Newman and Sara Andrade prevailed in their respective singles matches to secure the sweep.
RU returns to the court at 7 p.m. this evening against Minnesota State-Mankato.
