CHARLESTON, SC. – The Radford volleyball team defeated Charleston Southern in straight sets on Friday night, led by junior Valerie Gonzalez.

The Highlanders (17-3, 7-2 Big South) got off to a slow start falling behind in the first set after taking a 1-0 lead. This was the first of four lead changes throughout the set. Radford went on a 3-0 run and took a 14-13 lead. After CSU (8-15, 3-6 Big South) took a 18-14 lead, Radford stormed on a 8-2 run, and took a 22-20 lead. Both team scored three points each, but a Buccaneer attack error gave Radford the first set win.

The second set was back-and-forth early resulting in eight ties through 11 points. A service ace by Gonzalez got the Highlanders started on a 14-4 run to end the set, winning 25-15. The third set saw Radford fall behind early yet again, but Radford battled back to take a 18-16 lead. A late push by CSU evened the set at 20-20, but Highlanders finished on a 5-2 run. The last point was scored on Gonzalez's 19th kill sealing a 25-23 victory and a 3-0 sweep of the Buccaneers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  The Highlanders tallied 47 kills to the Buccaneers 34 along with hitting .256, while CSU hit .136.
• Valerie Gonzalez led the team with 19 kills and had a .271 hitting percentage. She also recorded 14 digs picking up a double-double.
• Maddie Palmer is the fifth Highlander to join the 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs club. She recorded a double-double with 16 digs and 13 kills.
• Haley Kleespies picked up 39 assists, three digs and three kills on the night.
• Radford recorded 66 digs, which is 16 more than CSU and had five total blocks, led by Palmer and Amaya Rousseau with four each.
