HIGHLANDERS HAVE STRONG FIRST DAY IN WAKE FOREST INVITE

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The first day of the Wake Forest Invitational saw the Radford men's tennis put together a strong showing as several Highlanders will play semifinal matches on Saturday.

Matko Varga and Robin Calais earned draws to play in the C3 Singles flight. After earning Round of 16 byes, Varga defeated Will Pierkarsky of Indiana in the quarterfinals 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, advancing to a semifinal matchup against Collin Thomson of Charlotte on Saturday.

Calais battled Andrew Sinai of UNC Asheville, but fell in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 quarterfinal match. He will now face East Carolina's Vlad Anghel on Saturday in a fifth-place match.

Carlos Sala fell to Michael Perry of George Washington 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 16 of the C1 Singles Flight. After receiving a bye in the consolation quarterfinals, Sala will face Charlotte's Michael Bass in the semifinals on Saturday.

In the C2 Singles Round of 16, Michiel Meekers dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Siem Fenne of Charlotte. Also, receiving a consolation quarterfinal bye, Meekers will face Ed Colclough of UNC Asheville in the semifinals.

In B1 Doubles Flight, Varga and Sala advanced to the winner's bracket quarterfinals with a 6-4 victory over Collin Thomson and Noah Milliken of Charlotte. The duo will now face Reese Daly and Colclough of UNC Asheville in the semifinals.

Rounding out doubles play in the A1 Doubles Flight, Calais and Meekers gave the No. 2 seed team of Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak of Duke everything they wanted in a 6-4 first round loss. The duo will now face Jorge Alfonzo and Gonzalo Garcia of Tennessee Tech in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.

The Highlanders return to action on Saturday on day two of the Wake Forest Invite, action is slated for 9 a.m.
