VARGA PICKS UP WINS; RADFORD DROPS 4-3 DECISION AT BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Returning to action for the first time in nine days, Radford opened its Spring Break trip against Bethune-Cookman as the Highlanders dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the Wildcats.

The decision snapped the Highlanders two-match winning streak, falling to 3-3 on the year.

"Today, we played flat in doubles and it ended up costing us. Bethune-Cookman came ready to play with a lot of intensity which led them to take control of the match," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "We couldn't make comebacks in some key spots."

The Wildcats picked up the doubles point quickly, despite Rodrigo Magalhaes and Matko Varga taking No. 3 doubles with a 6-3 victory.

Bethune-Cookman extended its lead to 3-0 after taking the first two singles matches. Varga put the Highlanders on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over David Ocampo in No. 3 singles.

Alexandros Caldwell followed with 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 dominating match after dropping the first set. Caldwell's win inched Radford within 3-2.

The Highlanders were unable to capitalize as Juan Navarro clinched the match for the Wildcats with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Robin Calais in No. 5 singles.

Radford's other singles point came via Michiel Meekers in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Juan Diego Ruiz in No. 4 singles.

Radford will face Toledo on Wednesday in neutral site action at 3 p.m., in Orlando, Fla.
