Women Take Third, Men Fourth at Big South Championships

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Radford University men's and women's cross country teams displayed strong performances at the Big South Championships on Saturday morning. Chloe Wellings paced the Highlanders in the women's race as she finished on the podium in third place, a time quick enough to help Radford take third in the team standings. Clay Kelly was the first Highlander to cross the line in the men's race. He finished in 19th place to propel Radford to fourth place as a team.

The championship meet was held at Longwood University. The women started the day off with a 5,000-meter race before the men finished things off with an 8,000-meter event.

WOMEN'S RESULTS
Wellings' time of 17:21.9 led the Highlanders to a third-place effort as a team. Her standout performance earned her First Team All-Conference honors after narrowly missing out with a 15th-place finish a year ago. The junior posted a personal best time, moving her up to second place in the program's all-time record book.

Lucy Thornton was the second Highlander to cross the line as she recorded a time of 18:15.0 to secure 13th place. The graduate student's time was quick enough to place her on the All-Conference Second Team. She finishes her career as one of the Big South's best to accompany and individual title at the Roanoke XC Invitational earlier this season.

Savannah Hoff (18:47.5) and Abby Seigel (18:54.6) both posted sub-19-minute times to be the next two scoring Highlanders. The duo finished the race in 21st and 22nd position, respectively.

Rachel Millirons also finished in the top third of the field as she rounded out the scoring for Radford. The senior finished the race with a time of 19:00.2 to place 25th.

MEN'S RESULTS
Kelly posted the quick time for the Highlanders, recording a 25:53.9 effort. His sub-26 minute performance was enough to put him in the top quarter of the field.

Ethan Gear was the next Highlander to score as the stellar freshman finished with a time of 26:03.8 in his first conference championship meet, good enough for 24th place.

Sam Sikora and Nick McCumsey finished in 26th and 27th to continue Radford's scoring efforts. The pair registered times of 26:12.0 and 26:14.3, performances good enough to finish in the top third of the race.

Peyton Hurd's time of 26:29.1 was enough to round out the Highlander scoring. The senior came across the line 32nd.

At the conclusion of the meet, the Big South also announced its annual awards, with MegAnne Gilmore and Nick McCumsey being rewarded for their accomplishments in the classroom with Big South All-Academic honors.
