Leahy Steps Up in Radford’s 4-3 Win Over Appalachian State

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (2-0) held on Wednesday afternoon to take down Appalachian State 4-3 in a tightly contested match. Marielle Leahy had the big victory on court six singles winning in three sets to clinch the match for Radford.

To start the afternoon the two squads faced off in doubles play where Radford was able to slip away with the point thanks to a huge win on court one by Salma Loudili and Malin Falk. Emily Brandow and Priscilla Stojanovska put Radford out front with a 6-3 win on court three while Loudili and Falk battled back on the top court to clinch what ended up being a crucial point.

In singles play, Camryn McClure was the first to finish for Radford. McClure battled back from an early deficit to win 6-4, 6-2 and bump Radford's lead to 2-0. Loudili was able to push the lead to 3-0 thanks to her victory in straight sets on court one. Appalachian State did not go away quietly, however, and would take two straight courts to tighten the match at 3-2.

It was Leahy who stepped up big for the Highlanders on court six. Leahy won in the third set after a long battle 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to clinch the match in Radford's favor. The win over Appalachian State marked Radford's first win in the series history since 2012.
