FARMVILLE, Va. – After opening the season atop the podium at the Radford Relays last week, the Highlanders' men's and women's cross country teams doubled down with a pair of victories at the Lancer Pink Invite on Saturday. Radford dominated the day, earning the top nine spots on the men's side and recording the top seven positions in the women's race.
The event was held on the cross country loop at the Longwood Golf Course. The women opened the day with a 5,000-meter race before the men closed things out with an 8,000-meter event.
MEN'S RESULTS
Sam Sikora paced the field with a time 26:45.7 to earn the victory. The Highlanders swept the podium after
Luke Richards (26:51.1) and
Charlie Dance (26:59.3) posted sub-27-minute times.
A tight finish between Benjamin Pinckney (27:01.7) and
Clay Kelly (27:03.8) helped Radford round out the top five positions.
An impressive day from the Highlanders saw them take the top nine spots in the race.
Alejo Cobos (27:21.8),
Nick McCumsey (27:40.8),
Liam McDonald (27:41.9) and
Peyton Hurd (27:53.8) all crossed the line in under 28 minutes to solidify Radford's dominance.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Sophie Magson snagged the win for Radford, posting a final time of 18:35.3. Fellow Highlander
Lucy Thornton finished just a couple seconds behind as she recorded a time of 18:37.8 to place second.
A pair of sub-19-minute performances
Chloe Wellings (18:42.6) and
MegAnne Gilmore (18:53.6) helped the Highlanders secure all three spots on the podium and continue their succession of top finishes.
The trio of
Savannah Hoff (19:23.5),
Kate McLearen (19:36.0) and
Natalie Preston (19:55.4) all posted times under 20 minutes to expand upon Radford's domination.
UP NEXT
Radford returns to action next weekend when they travel across town to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. The event will take place at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course. Alumni will compete in a 4,000-meter event at 5:30 p.m. to open the evening before the women run 6,000 meters at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 6:40 p.m.
