Men’s Tennis Advances to Third Place Game of HEB Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Radford men's tennis program split their contests Friday afternoon at the HEB Tournament of Champions. Radford opened the day with a dominant 4-0 win over Abilene Christian but fell to a tough UTSA squad 4-1.
MATCH ONE
In the opening match of the day the Highlanders matched up with last season's tournament champions out of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Abilene Christian. The Highlanders were dominant en route to a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats.
In doubles Radford was able to pick up wins on courts one and three. Demis Taramonlis and Konstantinos Raptis continued their strong start to the year together with a 6-4 victory on the top flight. Robert Hagen and Charles Courteau won by the same margin 6-4 on court three to secure the point. Aditya Balsekar and Guilherme Severin were also battling on court two, tied up 4-all before going unfinished.
In singles play just about every court went to three sets. The lone outlier was Filippo Marangoni on court six who took down his Wildcat opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Taramonlis was excellent once again on the top flight winning 6-1, 0-6, 6-0 for his second straight singles win.
The clinching court belonged to Hagen today as the sophomore battled in three sets to win the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Raptis and Balsekar were also leading in the third set of their matches before going unfinished. Severin was tied up in a tight one on court four winning his first set 7-5 before going unfinished.
With the win, Radford was able to advance onwards to the semifinals of the HEB Tournament of Champions. UTSA, who defeated Oral Roberts 4-0 in the first round, would be Radford's second opponent of the day.
MATCH TWO
In the second match of the day Radford faced a tough UTSA squad and was competitive on just about every court. UTSA took the doubles point with a close win on court two, but Courteau and Hagen were able to pick up a strong 6-1 victory on court three.
In singles play it was Severin who would pick up the lone point of the match for Radford. Severin picked up a huge victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. UTSA would take courts three, five and six to seal their victory. Taramonlis was attempting a comeback on the top flight while Balsekar looked poised to complete a comeback of his own on court two 5-7, 6-2, 2-1 before going unfinished.
UP NEXT
With today's results, the Highlanders next test will be in the third-place match against the tournament hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match is currently set for 1 p.m. ET on February 18th and will be the conclusion to the HEB Tournament.
