RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's tennis program battled in a tight 4-3 loss to New Mexico Saturday afternoon, fighting windy and chilly conditions to the final court against a strong opponent.
The cold evening got its start with a tightly contested doubles point that set the tone for the match. Robert Hagen and Charles Courteau picked up a dominant 6-2 win on court three to get Radford in position for the point. On court one, the dominant duo of Demis Taramonlis and Konstantinos Raptis outlasted their opponents to win 7-5 and clinch the 1-0 advantage.
In an afternoon full of tight battles, Guilherme Severin worked with ease on court four singles. The junior stayed hot with a 6-4, 6-3 win to put Radford back up 2-1. After a rough start, Raptis rebounded and earned a mentally tough victory on court three. Raptis came back for the three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win to make it 3-2 Radford.
It came down to the final court, the top flight, where Taramonlis was attempted a comeback of his own. After a tough first set, and trailing 4-1 in the second set, Taramonlis battled all the way back to force a third set. Taramonlis would lead in that final set, but the close match slipped away 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 and sealed the Highlanders fate in the 4-3 loss.
