Women’s Tennis Falls Just Short in Tough Battle with UNC Asheville

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's tennis program opened the home portion of its Big South schedule Saturday afternoon against UNC Asheville with a valiant singles effort before coming up just short in a 4-3 final.
In doubles play it was UNC Asheville who would gain the early 1-0 advantage and a crucial doubles point with wins on courts one and two. On court three, the pairing of Brooke Murphy picked up a decisive 6-2 victory.
In singles play, the Highlanders would go to work to keep the match tight. Lexi Smolder was first to get Radford on the board as she won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. UNC Asheville claimed victory on courts five and six, but Radford struck back thanks to a big win by freshman Michaela Stephens on court two 6-2, 7-5.
UNC Asheville was able to clinch today's match with a win on court one, but Emily Brandow held on competing on court three to win 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(4) to draw the final score at 4-3.
Radford closes out conference play next week with a pair of matches. Action begins on Tuesday, April 9th as Radford visits Longwood for a 2 p.m. first serve.
