Volleyball Blanked in Weekend Opener Against Wichita State

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Radford volleyball program fell to a tough Wichita State squad Thursday morning 3-0 in their first game at the Golden Eagle Invitational.

The Highlanders began the early match strong going point for point as both teams settled in. The Highlanders got early points off a kill from Aubrey Hatch and service error from the Shockers. A kill by Olivia Ryno tightened things at 4-5, but Wichita State got a 5-1 run to establish their first big lead.

The Shockers extended their run to break away with a 17-6 lead. The Highlanders were able to force a Shockers timeout behind their own 6-1 run. Moore recorded a kill by Lea Gage served up her first ace of the day. A kill by Gabriela Smolenska and two more aces from Moore made it just an 18-12 deficit. The Shockers regained control out of the timeout, though, and took set one 25-17.

The Shockers stayed hot into the second set, bursting out to a 12-2 lead. Out of a timeout Radford got kills from Smolenska, Hatch and Moore. The deficit was too large to overcome, as Wichita State took set two 25-11.

Despite a close start in the third set, the match slipped away from the Highlanders. After being tied at seven-all, Wichita State used a 7-1 run to pull away and eventually win the third set 25-12 and the match 3-0.

The Highlanders will look to bounce back with a pair of games tomorrow, September 12th against the weekend hosts Tennessee Tech (3:00 p.m.) and Samford (6:00 p.m.). The Highlanders match against the Goldean Eagles will be streamed on ESPN+.
