Volleyball Falls in Pair of Matches with UIC and Toledo
9/5/2025 6:15:00 PM | Volleyball
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Radford volleyball program fell in a pair of tough matches Friday afternoon to UIC (3-0) and Toledo (3-0) to begin their weekend at Morehead State.
GAME ONE
The Highlanders would need to dig out of an early hole in the first set of the day as UIC quickly went ahead 4-0 behind three service aces. Kills by Aubrey Hatch and Taryn Roberts helped right the ship for Radford but was unable to string together a lengthy run.
Â
Down 14-9, Radford clawed back thanks to a 4-1 run fueled by UIC miscues, kills by Moore and Gabriela Smolenska and a block by Sloss and Smolenska. Radford kept fighting and got things as close as 19-18, forcing a timeout by UIC. Out of the timeout, the Flames went on a 5-0 run that ultimately sealed the set in their favor, 25-19.
Â
Down 4-1 early in the second set, Radford stormed back with four straight points to take their first lead of the day. Kills from Hatch and Sloss as well as a block from Ryno and Smolenska put Radford ahead. The two squads would trade leads until the midway point, as UIC got an extended 9-2 run to pull ahead 17-10.
Â
Radford didn't go away quietly, going on a 4-0 run behind two aces from Roberts to pull back close. Another late run that saw another pair of kills by Roberts wouldn't be quite enough to take back the set, as UIC went ahead 2-0 taking set two 25-22.
Â
The third set saw the Highlanders and Flames trading points back and forth with no clear advantage. A kill by Sloss and miscue from the Flames put Radford ahead 9-6, but UIC got another extended run to pull back ahead 14-11. Radford would retie the set at 14-alll thanks to some strong defense and would ride that rally to a 20-17 lead.
Â
UIC stored up one last big run to end the match, however, erasing Radford's lead with a 3-0 run and scored seven of the last nine points of the set. Radford wasn't able to rally to survive, dropping the third set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Â
GAME TWO
In Radford second match of the day, an early run in the first set would prove difficult to overcome. The Rockets would go on an 8-0 run to go up 10-2 early, a deficit that proved costly. Down by as much as 17-7, Radford got a rally going behind kills from Roberts and Sloss to pull the set back within five points at 18-13.
Â
Nerro would add a service ace to cut things closer, but Toledo eventually pulled away after a timeout, scoring seven of the last nine points of the set to win 25-16. The second set of the match had a much tighter start. Some Toledo errors helped move the offense along as Roberts continued her strong match with some more kills and a block assist.
Â
Radford would briefly lead at 9-8 and 10-9 with kills and blocks from Moore. A big run by Toledo would see the set slip away as the Rockets sped away behind service aces and attack errors from the Highlanders 25-16.
Â
Down to their final set, Radford looked to mount one last comeback attempt but was thwarted by another extended run. After playing even at the start, Toledo took full control after the 10-7 mark, going on an 8-2 run to break the set open with an 18-9 advantage. The Highlanders wouldn't fully recover, dropping the third set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
