Clutch Shooting Late Lifts Highlanders Over Blue Hose in Double Overtime

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford men's basketball program used clutch shooting from Jaylon Johnson and Del Jones late in their visit to Presbyterian Saturday afternoon, lasting two overtimes to come back in the 93-84 win in double overtime

KEY STATS
  • Johnson tied his Highlander high with 23 points, lighting up with six triples and a perfect three-for-three mark in overtime from deep.
  • Radford ran away in the turnover battle, winning the margin 22-9, converting those turnovers into 15 points, nine of which came after halftime.
  • Mari Jordan tallied three blocks in the game, all coming in the closing minutes of the game at multiple key moments across the two overtime periods.
  • Del Jones stayed hot with 22 points while Dennis Parker Jr. (15) and Lukas Walls (11) also finished in double figures.
  • The Highlanders last won in overtime near the end of the 2023 season against Tarleton State in the first round of the CBI. Their last true road game overtime win came all the way back in 2020 at Charleston Southern.

PLAY BY PLAY
Getting right back to it after a big game Thursday night, Jones led Radford from the start with a three in the opening minutes. Dennis Parker Jr. added a make down low following a Presbyterian dunk that made it a 5-4 Radford lead. Shooting was cold early, though, as that accounted for Radford's two floor makes through five minutes.

At the 14:19 mark, Brown followed two made free throws to break the shooting ice with a layup and a second chance tip-in that pushed Radford back up 11-10.  Parker Jr. and Mari Jordan combined to give Radford their biggest lead of the half at 20-12. From there the cold shooting bit again as one make from M. Jordan accounted for Radford's offense over two minutes. Louie Jordan broke that spell with a three, but the Blue Hose kept charging and used back-to-back threes to establish a 36-33 lead at halftime.

The Blue Hose kept rolling out of the break forcing the Highlanders to play catch up for most of the second half. L. Jordan kickstarted the offense with a three and Walls shortly followed to keep Radford behind just a possession. Another make from deep by Johnson and layup from Jones pulled Radford within one with 14:22 left in the half.

Radford kept chipping away behind a make from M. Jordan and another three from Johnson. The Blue Hose had responses each time as the two squads went shot for shot. Trailing 68-66, a floater by Jones finally tied the game up with 5:12 remaining. A fastbreak dunk from Brown gave Radford a lead while Johnson followed with a three to further solidify the lead at 73-71.

Jonse had a big hit with under a minute to go to give Radford another slim lead, but Presbyterian responded by tying the game at the free throw line. Jones' three was just off the mark at the buzzer, forcing Radford into overtime for the first time this season.

It was a cold start to the first overtime period, but Johnson broke that ice with his first big three pointer in extra time. Up 79-77, Presbyterian rattled off four straight to take a lead that was quickly snuffed out by a Jones jumper. Parker Jr. would hit a pair of big free throws to tie the game again. M. Jordan added a big block on the Blue Hose game-winning shot attempt to force a second overtime.

From there, the Highlanders got a pair of big shots to pull away. Johnson would hit back-to-back threes to set a brand-new tone in the game, putting the Blue Hose on their heels. Radford got to work at the free throw line with Parker Jr. and Jones combining for four points. The defense locked things down, not allowing Presbyterian to score over the final four minutes allowing Radford to head home with the 93-84 win.
