Men’s Basketball Sprints Past Charleston Southern for Dominant Senior Day Win

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program used an incredible start and never looked back to cruise past Charleston Southern in a dominant 90-80 final Saturday afternoon for the senior day victory.
 
Prior to the game, the Highlanders honored five seniors and celebrated their collegiate careers. Student manager Michael Jacome as well as players Jaylon Johnson, Brennan Rigsby Jr., Louie Jordan and Tyson Brown were all honored before tip.
 
KEY STATS
  • Johnson led the scoring efforts for both sides tallying 17 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting showing.
  • Radford was efficient all day, shooting over 50% with 11 different players getting in on the scoring fun.
  • The turnover bug hit the Buccaneers hard with 11 of their 15 turnovers coming in the first 20 minutes. Radford created 24 points off those turnovers and outscored Charleston Southern 26-9 in the fastbreak.
  • Dennis Parker Jr. finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was Radford's eighth double-double this season.
  • Radford sweeps the season series against Charleston Southern for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
The seniors led Radford out the gates as Johnson and Brown had the team's first two makes for an early lead. After going ahead 10-6, Charleston Southern scored five straight to grab an 11-10 lead. That was the last time the Buccaneers would lead all day as Radford got an 8-0 run fueled in part by free throws.
 
A triple by Mari Jordan and an and-one jumper from Jones kept the offense chugging along. Parker Jr. energized the arena with a dunk followed by a quick fastbreak lay to vault Radford ahead 34-24. A three by Jordan capped the 11-0 Radford run, broken up by a Buccaneers layup. Jordan kept firing, though, hitting another three and a pair of free throws that pushed the lead even further.
 
A deep three by Jones followed by two more free throws helped cap an impressive start for Radford, ahead 50-30 with 20 minutes to play. Out of the break, Radford didn't miss a beat and wouldn't relinquish their large lead until the final minutes of play. Parker Jr., Jones and Brown kept Radford firing while M. Jordan and Parker Jr. added layups down low for the 60-39 lead.
 
Radford would have a response for each Charleston Southern make down the stretch. A three by Frederik Erichsen would see Radford go up 81-54 with 6:42 to play and, despite a two-minute scoreless streak after that, Radford held that 20+ point lead to the final media break.
 
Subbing out a majority of their main minutes, Charleston Southern would pick up a flurry of points in the final minutes of the game to pull the final score closer. Radford was never in danger, though, as the team held on for the 90-80 victory.
 
AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • High Point took care of business with another big offensive showing, defeating Gardner-Webb 112-87 on the road.
  • Presbyterian used a pair of big free throws late to pick up a big road win at UNC Asheville 58-57.
  • Longwood was forced into overtime at home once again, but held on for the 82-75 victory over USC Upstate.
