
Tomiac Places Second at Longwood Fall Invitational

FARMVILLE, Va. – The women's tennis team competed at the Longwood Fall Invitational this weekend. Sophomore Ivana Tomiac (Zagreb, Croatia/Third Gymnasium) had a 2-1 record in singles and doubles.
Tomiac defeated Nimitz of James Madison and Gouveia of Liberty to advance to the finals against Kuznetsova of Liberty, were she fell 8-6. Tomiac was the lone Highlander to advance to the final round of competition. Tomiac partnered with Mirna Matic (Umag, Croatia/Vladimir Gortan Buje) to finish third in the top doubles bracket. They rebounded from a first round lost to win their next two matches, 8-6, 8-6.
In other singles action, Ally Spector (Laurel, Md./Reservior), Antonietta Iosue (Damascus, Md./Damascus), Emerald Lauzon (Bristol, Va./John S. Battle), Christina Hammond (Charles Town, W.Va./Jefferson), Mia Drobnjak (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska gimnazija), Petra Dajevic (Zagreb, Croatia/gimnazija) and Matic all posted the same singles record of 1-1.
In doubles action, Hammond and Lauzon lost their first match but bounced back to win their next two matches, 9-7, 8-2 to finish third in the flight B bracket. Drobnjak and Dajevic and Iosue and Spector both finished with a 1-2 record in doubles.
The women head to Wilmington N.C. on October 10 to participate in the UNCW Fall Tournament.
