MATCH RESULTS
ROCK HILL, S.C. – After almost two weeks away action, No. 68 Radford recorded its fifth straight victory with a 5-2 decision over Big South rival Winthrop Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action at Memorial Courts.
The win was the Highlanders 19th in their last 20 conference tilts as they improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league competition, while Winthrop falls to 2-2 and 1-1.
For the seventh time in eight matches this season, Radford grabbed a 1-0 advantage after claiming the doubles point.
The Highlander duo of Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual School) and Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) wasted little time improving their doubles' record to 6-1 with an 8-1 victory at the top spot.
After Roy Sitchel and Diego Toledo claimed the middle match for Winthrop by an 8-4 margin, Radford's freshman tandem of Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia/Birotechnika Grammar School) and Stefan Bojic (Novi Sad, Serbia) needed an extra game, but won the crucial third tilt, 9-7.
Ogrizek carried his momentum into singles action with a straight-set (6-3, 6-0) win over Daniel Daudt on the fifth court to put the Highlanders up 2-0.
Winthrop cut the deficit to 2-1 with a triumph from Nadav Ruppin over Bojic, but that's as close as it would get as Radford sealed the dual with victories from Sayer (6-1, 7-5) and Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia / Oroslavje Secondary School) (7-6, 6-4) at the top two singles spots.
Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) added the final point for the Highlanders with a 6-1, 7-5 defeat of Toledo.
Radford will enjoy another week break before traveling to Elon for a 1 p.m. match on Feb. 28.
