LEXINGTON, Va. –Singles victories at positions one through five helped Radford defeat Washington & Lee, 6-3, in women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at Duchossis Tennis Center.

The Highlanders improve to 1-1 on the season, while Washington & Lee falls to 0-1.

The Highlanders lost the first two doubles matches to fall behind early, 2-1. The tandem of Petra Dajevic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazija) and Emerald Lauzon (Bristol, Va./John S. Battle) captured the lone doubles point as they defeated Lauren Caire and Trelsie Sadler, 8-4.

Behind 2-1 after the double matches the Highlanders bounced back to seal the match with four straight singles victories. Mia Drobnjak (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazija), Ivana Tomiac (Zagreb, Croatia/Third Gymnasium) and Mirna Matic (Umag. Croatia/Vladmir Gortan Buje) each won their matches in straight-sets. Dajevic pushed the margin to 5-2 with a three-set victory over Lauren Lukas at the third position. Sarah Tegner (Sweden/Karlbergs) clinched it for the Highlanders with a three-set victory over Sallie Griffin.

The Highlanders return to action on Sept. 19 when they face Davidson at noon.
