BLACKSBURG, Va. – After a 48-day layoff, Radford track and field recorded several personal bests and turned in a number of solid performances on the final day of the Hokie Invitational on Saturday.
Senior Britney Whittaker got a great start off the blocks and led every lap of the 800m to finish first in her heat and 14th overall with a time of 2:21.99.
Freshman Diane Wesh clocked in a 59.20 time in the 400m to kick off the final day for Radford, good for an 18th-place finish.
The long layoff had no effect on freshman Amber Church, as she recorded a personal best leap of 16-6/5.03m in the long jump. She bettered her previous distance by 0.12m.
On the men's side, sophomore Kaise White and junior Brett Olinger finished back-to-back in the 400m with times of 50.24 and 50.25, respectively. Later in the meet, White recorded a season-best 22.36 in the 200 to place 21st and won his heat in the process.
In the field events, sophomore Tyler Sturgill threw a personal best 45-7/13.89m in the shot put to finish 16th.
“We did some good things today coming back from a five and a half week layoff, but we need to get used to competing again,” said head coach Brent Chumbley. “In many of the races, we started out great but lost our legs in the second half. At the same time, there were some glimpses of really good things to come. On the technical events, we just need to get more sharp.”
Radford will be back on the track next weekend, January 28-29, when it participates in the Liberty Open.
