12/23/2011 11:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite freshmen R.J. Price (Richmond, Va., Atlee) and Javonte Green (Alberta, Va., Brunswick) combining for 39 points, Radford was edged by Maryland, 65-60, in non-conference men's basketball action Friday evening at the Comcast Center.
For the second time in as many outings, Price went for a new season-high, leading all players with 22 points, including five of his club's eight 3-pointers.
Green finished with a personal-best 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds for his second career double-double, while Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga., Johnson) also contributed double digits for the Highlanders with 10.
Ashton Pankey led Maryland (7-3) with 17 points, Terrell Stoglin had 15 and James Padgett scored 10.
In addition to holding Radford (3-11) without a field goal for almost nine minutes, the Terps used a small spurt to break a 46-46 tie and go in front for good.
After Stoglin gave Maryland its largest lead of the game, 58-51, the Highlanders got to within three, 61-58, on a Price triple with 1:21 left, but was unable to get closer.
Maryland finished with a 43-38 advantage on the glass, including 19 offensive rebounds.
After both teams shot almost 50 percent in the first 20 minutes of action, they combined for just seven field goals in the second half.
Radford, which hit six 3-pointers in the opening half, used a 10-3 run capped off by a Kyle Noreen (Minneapolis, Minn., Minnesota Transitions Center) trey to go up, 39-33. The Terrapins responded with six unanswered to tie the score at the break.
Price led all players at the half with 16 points, while Green added 11 in the period on 4-of-4 shooting, including his first career 3-pointer.
Radford will enjoy an eight-day break for the Holiday before entertaining Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31.
