MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Katie Parrott returned a career-best 2-over 74 to the clubhouse Tuesday to lead the Radford women's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the CSU Wendy's Invitational contested at the par 72, 6,021-yard Rivertowne Country Club.
The Highlanders' three-round ledger of 928 (314-303-311) was four shots clear of USC Beaufort's 932 (302-315-315) and only eight shots behind fifth-place Armstrong Atlantic's 920 (301-309-310). Richmond turned in an 893 (293-294-306) to record the wire-to-wire victory over runner-up Wofford, which fired a 905 (310-294-301).
Leading the Highlanders was Hayley Hammond, who finished tied for 16th at 230 (76-75-79). For Hammond, the tournament marked her second Top-20 performance through four events this season.
Five shots behind Hammond was Paige Reese, who logged a season-low 54-hole total of 235 (76-77-82) to finish tied for 29th. Alexandra Austin bounced back during the final round to finish tied for 36th at 237 (82-79-76). Kirsty Condon also tied for 36th at 237 (80-72-85).
However, the day belonged to the freshman from Brentwood, Tenn. Parrott shaved two strokes off her previous career-best of 76 fired at the Highlander Invitational last month to lead the Radford contingent in the final round. Her three-round 241 (87-80-74) also sets a career-low 54-hole ledger, besting her 243 shot at the season-opening Bison Intercollegiate.
Entering the final round one shot back of overnight leaders Jenna Birch (Armstrong Atlantic) and Maria Kjelldorff (Western Carolina), Richmond's Tracy Martin turned in an even-par 72 Tuesday to win medalist honors. Her 1-under-par 215 (70-73-72) was two shots clear of Birch's 217 (68-74-75).
The Highlanders conclude their fall slate at next week's 54-hole Fighting Camel Classic hosted by Campbell at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C.
