RADFORD, Va. - With a pair of steals on an otherwise light day of work for Radford (9-4) standout Javonte Green, the senior forward became the all-time leader in school history with 193 breaking the record held by Rod Cousin (1984-88). Green finished with eight points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes as RU easily handled Central Penn (8-5), 119-69, at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders had their best shooting night under Mike Jones, 70.1 percent from the floor (47-67).
The previous field goal shooting mark had stood since 1991 when the Highlanders hit 35 of 54 (64.8 percent) shots against Cabrini at the Dedmon Center.
Radford won for the fourth straight game and closed its non-conference slate capturing seven of its last eight games.
"I liked the way we started the game defensively," Jones said. "It's hard to keep that intensity with this type of game, but we need to do a better job of playing 40 minutes rather than 20. We are a mature team, so there are no excuses."
Cameron Jones and Kyle Noreen each scored career highs in the onslaught over the Knights. Jones hit 10 of 12 shots from the field to score 22 points, and Noreen made six of his seven attempts to finish with 14. R.J. Price buried five three-point field goals and finished with 16 on the day. YaYa Anderson was the fourth Highlander to reach double figures with 11. Rashun Davis tied his career best with eight assists. Jalen Carethers reached 100 blocks for his career as well.
"It was good to get the guys back from a long break," Jones said. "We got off to a great start, and overall I was pleased with the first effort coming back from the holiday break."
Radford closed the final 10 minutes of the first half with a 36-9 run to put the game away early. RU held a 63-27 edge at intermission. The Highlanders dominated several statistical categories: 51-22 rebounds, 64-12 bench scoring, 32-4 fast break points, 64-36 points in the paint, 28-7 assists.
Andre Batte led the Knights with a game high 27 points. Devon Dorsey added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Radford opens Big South play Wednesday at home on New Year's Eve. The Highlanders host UNC Asheville at Dedmon beginning at 4:00 p.m.
