RADFORD, Va. – Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls combined for a win at No. 1 doubles, but nationally-ranked Winthrop stormed past Radford in singles to claim a 7-0 Big South women's tennis victory Wednesday afternoon at the Radford University Tennis Complex.
Doubles competition was tightly contested. Winthrop (13-4, 6-1 Big South) struck first with an 8-4 win on court three over Gisela Garcia and Taylor Fay. At the second flight, Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver battled back from a 6-1 deficit to only trail 7-5 late in the match. However, Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu won the next point to prevail, 8-5.
Although the doubles point was clinched, Newman and Valls erased an early deficit en route to an 8-6 triumph over Winthrop's top pair, Andressa Garcia and Alice Garcia. RU's No. 1 tandem improves to 4-3 in conference play.
The Eagles went on to capture all six singles points to secure the sweep.
Radford (8-11, 3-5 Big South) returns to action Thursday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore at the Radford University Tennis Complex.
