BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Javonte Green topped the 20-point mark for the third straight game with a game-high 21, and Brandon Holcomb equaled a career high with 14 points as Radford (11-7, 2-3) defeated Campbell (7-11, 1-4), 72-55, in Big South Conference play Thursday night. It was the first win over the Camels in Buies Creek in program history after six previous games there.
Trailing 14-11 with 11:46 to play in the first half, Radford went on a 10-0 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. Eight of those points were scored by Green, who had 15 by the eight-minute mark of the first half. All 12 of Radford's field goals in the first half were scored in the paint as RU carried a 32-19 lead into the intermission. The 19 points allowed were the fewest since the Highlanders allowed 17 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"We talked about imposing our will on both ends of the floor," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "We were locked in right from the beginning and executed the game plan to perfection. Tonight we stayed right on it. We were going to attack them in the paint all night."
In two previous road losses in conference play, RU was unable to hold double-digit leads in the second half. On Thursday, the Highlanders took the Camels' best punch and answered convincingly. Campbell cut the lead to just four points on three occasions in the first six minutes of the second half, but RU stepped up its defense and spurred a 24-5 spurt to take away any doubt to the game's outcome.
"We clamped down defensively and were able to get out and run again after they made a run at us in the second half," Jones said.
Holcomb led the surge in the second half on both ends of the floor. He finished the nigh 7-8 from the floor and blocked three shots. Green led the Highlanders in points, rebounds, and also assists with four. R.J. Price was quiet on the offensive end, but turned in three steals. YaYa Anderson added nine points in his second start of the season.
D.J. Mason led the Camels with 18 points and seven rebounds. Curtis Phillips added 12.
Radford had not defeated Campbell on its home floor since 1992. Prior to the 1993 season, the Camels played home games in Fayetteville, where RU stands 5-3 all-time. The Highlanders have played at CU three times since Campbell rejoined the Big South in 2011-12.
RU remains on the road Saturday at Winthrop for a 1:00 p.m. start.
