HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second time this season, Radford's men's basketball team went to double overtime in the nation's capital, and for the second time, Rashun Davis hit a game-winning 3-pointer, this one to give the Highlanders a 92-91 victory over Howard on Saturday.
- After Howard's James Daniel, the nation's leading scorer, made a mid-range jumper with 6.2 seconds left to put the Bison ahead Davis dribbled the ball up the right side, pulled up from 25 feet and, as he did in the season-opening win against Georgetown, hit nothing but net with one second on the clock.
- The Bison's desperation heave missed and the Highlanders survived Daniel's 38-point performance to end a two-game losing streak despite trailing for most of the two overtimes.
- The Highlanders overcame a six-point deficit in the first extra period as Ed Polite, Jr scored four points, Kion Brown hit a pair of clutch free throws and a jumper by Cameron Jones evened the game at 78-78.
- In the second OT, Howard led by four with 1:26 left, but a layup by Polite and putback by Darius Bolstad tied it. Daniel made two free throws, but Davis answered with a pair on the other end to deadlock it at 89 with 23 seconds left.
- Radford had its best offensive first half in five games, shooting 45 percent and leading by as many as 13, and nine at the break. Howard used a 15-4 run early in the second half to pull in front. It then became a tight back and forth battle for the final 13 minutes of regulation and the extra periods.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Aside from Davis' heroics, Polite, Jr. was the star in the game for Radford, tallying career highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds. The freshman scored 14 of the points after halftime, including nine in the overtimes. He shot 9 of 13 from the field, grabbed eight offensive rebounds and added three assists, two blocks and two steals.
- Davis finished with 23 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Cameron Jones had 16 points, on 6 of 10 shooting, along with four rebounds.
- Bolstad and Christian Lutete each added career-high games on the boards, totaling 10 and six, respectively. That duo, along with Polite, Jr. combined for 16 offensive rebounds, helping the Highlanders win rebounding battle 49-45 – including 23-20 in offensive.
- YaYa Anderson made his first start of the season and contributed seven points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.
- The teams combined for 59 fouls and 70 free-throw attempts, including 23 in the two extra five-minute periods. For the game, Howard was 30 for 40 at the stripe, while the Highlanders made 20 of 30.
- Despite going cold early in the second half, Radford finished the game at 43 percent, while Howard shot 41 percent.
- Along with Polite, Jr.'s scoring output, Bolstad and Lutete combined for 11 points, giving Radford 38 off the bench, while a shorthanded Howard team playing without two of its top three scorers managed just five among its reserves.
- Daniel, who came in averaging 28.4 per game, topped 30 points for the fifth time in 11 games, scoring 30 just in the second half and overtimes. After a 1 for 10 shooting first half, he finished 13 of 36 from the field, while making all 10 of his free throws.
- Marcel Boyd added 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Bison. A 55-percent free-throw shooter entering the game he made 9 of 10, including 7 of 8 in the final minute of regulation and the overtimes.
QUOTABLE
- "We knew it was going to be a heckuva game no matter what, and they surely gave us everything they had. I thought we just stayed the course. There were a lot of opportunities for us to panic, but we didn't so I was really proud that our guys maintained their poise. We lost it a little bit in the last game against Virginia Tech, but tonight our guys had great resolve, they coached each other and we were able to just stick with it throughout the game. I love the ball in Rashun's hands at the end. He's the one guy that I've coached that I feel like wants to win as badly as I do so when the ball's in his hand I feel confident that something good is going to happen." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
