- Records: Radford (5-4, 1-1 Big South) | Coastal Carolina (4-4, 1-1 Big South)
- Location: The HTC Center | Conway, S.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior guard Rashun Davis eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career, but Radford's late second-half comeback bid fell short in a 63-58 Big South Conference loss on the road at Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon.
- Trailing by 13 with 7:30 to play, the Highlanders used a 16-6 spurt to claw their way back and make it a one possession game in the final minute on a pull-up jumper by Taj Owens.
- A Coastal turnover on the other end gave Radford possession with 13.6 seconds left, but after a timeout, a violation on Cameron Jones for stepping out of bounds before touching the ball took away Radford's chance to tie.
- The Highlanders fouled and Coastal converted two free throws on the other end to put it away.
- RU was unable to overcome another slow offensive start as it shot just 26 percent in the first half and scored a season-low 23 points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Davis became the 28th Highlander in program history to reach the milestone when he hit the number on the nose with a runner in the lane at the 9:51 mark in the second half. He now has 1,002 points and counting.
- Jones scored a game-high 21 points to keep RU in the game. He tied a season-high with five 3-pointers (on nine attempts) and finished 6 of 13 from the field. Jones made all four of his free throws and also grabbed six rebounds.
- Taj Owens scored seven of his 10 points in the last six minutes to help spark Radford's late run.
- Brandon Holcomb had each of his four points in the spurt and led Radford with eight rebounds.
- YaYa Anderson scored five points and now has 999 for his career.
- The Highlanders shot 9 of 24 from 3-point range in the game, but just 21 of 60 (35 percent) overall. RU had five 3's, but just two two-point baskets in the opening half as they went 7 for 27.
- Jones hit his fourth and fifth 3's to begin the second half and give Radford a brief 29-28 lead, but Coastal went on a 14-3 run after that to take control, at 44-34 with 11:12 to play.
- Ed Polite, Jr. tallied all seven of his points in the second half, but saw his streak of double-digit scoring games snapped at six.
- Radford outscored Coastal 28-27 off the bench and finished with a 40-38 rebounding edge, but the Chanticleers dominated the scoring in the paint 34-20.
- The Highlanders connected on just 7 of 14 free throws, while Coastal was 9 of 10.
- Coastal shot 45 percent in the second half to finish the game at 40 percent. The Chanticleers were led by post Marcus Freeman and guard Jaylen Shaw with 12 points each off the bench. Badou Diagne and Colton Ray-St Cyr each had 10 points.
- The loss was RU's eighth straight to the Chanticleers.
QUOTABLE
- "Our defense played well and gave us a chance to win, and I thought our offense created a lot of good looks. They're a championship team. They defend and make it tough, and I thought we made it tough on them. I thought it was a good defensive basketball game on both sides. We gave up a few too many easy ones to them. We could have probably held them down a little more than we did, but at the end of the day, we had some great opportunities and they didn't go down. We've got to figure out a way to make some of those and give ourselves more of a cushion." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
