RADFORD, Va. - Javonte Green made the most out of his final appearance at the Dedmon Center. The all-time leader in rebounds and steals at RU, Green recorded one of his best games in a Highlander uniform with a 21-point, 17-rebound, four-steal performance in a 72-62 victory over Gardner-Webb (18-13, 10-8) on Saturday. With the win, Radford (21-10, 12-6) secures the #4 seed in next week's Big South Tournament in Conway, S.C.
"It's great that on senior night for Javonte, whoever came to the game got to see what he has given us for four years," Radford head coach Mike Jones said.
Green, along with fellow seniors Jalen Carethers, Kyle Noreen, and R.J. Price, closed out their careers at the Dedmon Center with an impressive team performance and an important victory to give RU a bye until Friday's quarterfinal vs. Winthrop. Cameron Jones also notched his best performance in a Radford uniform. He hit 10-12 from the field and led RU with a career-high 24 points. Jones also grabbed seven rebounds.
"We knew that it was going to take a 40-minute effort," Coach Jones said. "I could tell in shoot around that we were energized and ready to play today."
Radford turned a 33-33 tie at halftime into a double-digit lead by the midway point of the second half with a smothering defense and converted offensive opportunities in transition. Price's layup, which was his first field goal of the night, came at the 10:39 mark and gave RU a 53-42 advantage. The Runnin' Bulldogs would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Highlanders finish the season 12-3 at home and tied for third in the Big South standings with Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. All three were a game behind Charleston Southern and High Point.
Radford will play Friday at 2:00 p.m. against Winthrop in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. The Highlanders swept the Eagles during the regular season.
