RADFORD, Va. – Radford Athletics hosted its annual Men's Basketball Alumni Celebration Weekend on January 26-27, which featured the 1997-98 men's basketball team and ESPN's Marty Smith, among other notable alumni.
"Having our alumni back on campus is always a great highlight for our department," Radford Director of Athletics, Robert Lineburg said. "We had a tremendous group back Saturday and it was a great to recognize all of them. Having members of the 1998 Big South Championship here was fantastic and it was so great to honor their accomplishments and contributions to Highlander Athletics."
The weekend featured 30 men's basketball alumni ranging from the years 1977-2013. Also in attendance were seven former athletics administration and staff members.
Former players and friends of the program enjoyed watching the open practice that kick-started Alumni Weekend on Friday afternoon. Following the practice, people congregated for fellowship at the social gathering to end the night.
Saturday began with the Winter Celebration Basketball Hospitality presented by Service Contracting of VA prior to the tip of the main event at 2 p.m., - the Radford men's game against Charleston Southern. The alumni were recognized at halftime of the game including a special recognition for the 1997-98 team. At the conclusion of the game, former players went down memory lane and played in the annual Alumni Game held at the Dedmon Center.
Notable alumni that returned for the festivities were Hall of Fame members Doug Day, David Smith and Dr. Charles "Chuck" Taylor. Members of Radford's first ever Big South Championship team recognized at halfitme were players Chibi Johnson, Corey Reed, Kevin Robinson, Eric Parker and Ryan Charles. Some of the support staff also recognized were assistant coach Stephen Barber, trainer Jackie (Clouse) Snell and former director of athletics Greig Denny. Marty Smith, who helped the sports information department during that season, spoke as part of the recognition.
While celebrating the weekend, Smith received the Radford University Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award for remarkable contributions to society through his profession. His leadership in the sports industry, community service and volunteer commitment to his alma mater makes him a role model. Marty's passion for Radford motivates others, raises Highlander pride and inspires current and future generations of Highlanders.
