MEN'S TENNIS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT WITH 4-0 VICTORY OVER HAMPTON

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Radford men's tennis team went across the commonwealth and returned home with a 4-0 victory over Big South newcomer, Hampton on Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club.

The two teams agreed to end the match early once the first team reached its fourth so the Highlanders could beat the icy weather heading into the NRV. The Pirates won the first doubles point on court 2, but the Highlanders only needed to win one because Andres Silva and Matko Varga didn't play an opponent and won by forfeit.

On court 1, Michiel Meekers and Alexandros Caldwell won a decisive tiebreaker, 7-6, and sent the Highlanders into singles play with a 1-0 lead.

Silva already gave Radford a 2-0 lead before singles play even started because he did not have an opponent to play. Meekers increased the lead to 3-0 when he defeated Charles Hudson 6-2, 6-2.

Matko Varga clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court 5 for his fifth singles win of the season. If Varga didn't clinch for Radford, Caldwell or Yevhen Sirous would have. Caldwell was one point away from a victory and Sirous was close as well.

The Highlanders open up conference play 1-0 for the second time in three years.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will travel to Winthrop on Friday at 1 p.m., and have a quick turnaround to face Duquesne in Blacksburg at the Burrows-Burleson Indoor Tennis Center.
