HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The men's tennis program won a tight 4-3 match over South Carolina State thanks to the work of freshman Konstantinos Raptis who clinched the match for the Highlanders on the final court.
With the doubles point and wins in singles by Andres Silva and Rodrigo Magalhaes, it was up to Raptis on court five in a 3-3 game. All three sets were tightly contested with Raptis winning the first set 7-5 but dropping the second set 4-6. With the rest of his team watching Raptis came up clutch once again for the Highlanders with a 6-3 victory in set three to seal the match.
It wasn't the first time the freshman had clinched a match at a crucial time for the Highlanders. Raptis last clinched a match for Radford on the road against Davidson on court six to lead the Highlanders to victory.
Radford won the doubles point after the team of Demi Taramonlis and Silva won their seventh straight game on court one 6-4. Magalhaes and Yevhen Sirous clinched the point for Radford with their 7-6 (8-6) victory on court two which was crucial as the Highlanders had already dropped court three and were in danger of losing the doubles point.
In singles play Magalhaes was quick to finish and give Radford a 2-0 lead with his win 6-3, 6-3 on court four. After South Carolina State won courts two and one, Silva added the Highlanders third point of the day by coming back to win court three 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5).
With court six going to South Carolina State, Raptis then clinched the match and started the spring break trip off with a victory for Radford. The win was Raptis' sixth of the year and fourth while on court five.
