Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Radford Uses Stellar First Half to Race Past UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford men's basketball team used a stellar first half to race past UNC Asheville, 73-63, on Monday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.

Radford (11-7, 10-2) put up 39 points and held UNC Asheville to just 35.7 percent shooting in the first half and led by as many as 22 at one point through the first 20 minutes.

The game started almost as identical as the last meeting between the two schools as Radford jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead through the first 5:40 of the game. The Highlander defense held the Bulldogs to 1-of-9 from the field, including a 0-for-2 start from 3-point distance during that stretch.

The Highlanders kept their foot on the gas pedal and pushed the lead up to 16 – 28-12 – with 6:25 to play in the first half. After a made UNC Asheville basket, Radford scored the next eight points and took its largest lead of the game at 22, 36-14, with less than four minutes to go in the half.

Back at full strength, the Highlanders had nine different players score in the first half, led by Shaquan Jules seven points. Jordan Hemphill and Quinton Morton-Robertson were not too far behind with six points each.

The Bulldogs ended the half on a 13-3 run and made it a manageable 12-point game. The squad extended their run with the first two baskets of the second half cutting the Highlander advantage to single-digits but Xavier Lipscomb hit a basket to end the run and spark a run of its own for Radford to push the lead back to 15 points, 46-31.

The Highlanders held a double-digit lead for most of the second half but things got interesting with less than four minutes to play as UNC Asheville made it an eight-point game, 67-59, with less than four minutes to play.

That's when the Radford defense held its ground and only allowed the Bulldogs to make one field goal to close out the remainder of the game. Asheville ended the game going 1-for-5 from the floor and only made two free throws.

Lipscomb took over the second half and ended with a team-leading 14 points, while Hemphill added a season-high 11 and led the Highlanders with two made 3-pointers.

Radford took the lead and held onto it for the entirety of the game. The Highlanders had a 52.2 field goal percentage in the second half.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"They don't know how hard it is to come back from such a gut-wrenching loss like yesterday," Mike Jones said. "I told them I didn't like the back-to-back format, but I like it today because you don't have to spend a week or two thinking about it. I thought that was big to be able to get back on the floor. I thought we played better in the first half today than we did yesterday, and I thought we played great in the first half yesterday. Today we were just better defensively. We have the benefit of having depth. Whoever we put in we trust that they'll be able to do the job and it was a total team effort today."
