RADFORD, VA. – Talia Douglas and Riley Oakes' efforts fell just short as the Radford softball team lost to Longwood, 4-3, in the series finale at Radford Softball Stadium on Wednesday morning.
Â
The first three and a half innings were full of shutout softball as both pitchers were cruising. Oakes only allowed one hit and it was a double in the second inning. She picked up four strikeouts through four innings.
Â
The scoreless softball ended in the fourth inning when Oakes scored the game's first run. She tripled to center field and then scored on a Douglas groundout putting Radford ahead 1-0.
Â
After each team had a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, the Lancers scored four in the sixth. The first run scored on an error and the other three scored on a three-run home run by Nia Green. It was her team-leading third hit of the game.
Â
Looking for a comeback, Radford needed three runs to tie the game. Douglas delivered once again with a two-run double plating Sydney Fisher and pinch-runner Kyndall Stanley. A strikeout ended the sixth inning with the game-tying run at second.
Â
Oakes managed to get a three up, three down inning in the top of the seventh, but Longwood pitcher Sydney Backstrom was able to do the same in the bottom of the frame with two punch outs.
Â
Douglas was responsible for all three of Radford's runs. She, along with Oakes, Lindsay Hunter and Taylor Breidt had a hit each. In the circle, Oakes tossed a complete game and allowed four runs – all unearned. She struck out six but suffered her fifth loss of the season.
Â
Up Next
Radford will travel to Charlottesville for an in-state matchup with ACC-foe Virginia. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
