Radford Dominates at Big South Individuals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford men's tennis program put up some great individual results at the Big South Individuals this past weekend hosted by Gardner-Webb. Aditya Balsekar and Guilherme Severin advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket while Dinos Raptis advanced to the semifinals of the singles bracket.

Tournament play got underway on Friday afternoon as the Highlanders competed in the first round of the doubles bracket. The doubles pairings of Aditya Balsekar and Guilherme Severin as well as Demis Taramonlis and Dinos Raptis both collected two victories to advance to the semifinals.

Balsekar and Severin defeated a pairing from Longwood 6-4 to start their day and in the quarterfinals were just as excellent in another 6-4 win over a pairing from Gardner-Webb. Taramonlis and Raptis won 6-3 over a pairing from Gardner-Webb and then went on to defeat a pairing from Presbyterian in dominant fashion 6-1.

Later that day in singles play four Highlanders would win their first-round match ups, all in straight sets. Taramonlis won 7-5, 6-2 against a Gardner-Webb opponent while his doubles partner Raptis also picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win over a Gardner-Webb foe. Balsekar added a third win to his day by defeating a UNC Asheville foe who retired due to injury 6(5)-7, 7-5. Guilherme Severin rounded out the victories on the day by winning 6-1, 6-4 over another UNC Asheville opponent.

On Saturday afternoon the Highlanders had both their doubles pairings meet in the semifinals of the main draw bracket. Balsekar and Severin would get the finals nod by winning 7-5. Moving on to singles play, the Highlanders continued to collect victories.

To reach the quarterfinals, Raptis, Taramonlis and Balsekar all won their second-round meetings. Tarmaonlis quickly defeated his Longwood opponent 6-2, 6-2. Raptis pulled off a huge upset over one of the better athletes in the Big South at UNC Asheville 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 to advance. Balsekar rounded out the morning wins by defeating his Gardner-Webb foe 6-3, 6(7)-7, 6-3.

To finish things off on Saturday afternoon, Raptis continued his winning ways. The senior came back once again to defeat his opponent from Gardner-Webb 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) and advance to the singles main draw bracket semifinals.

For Sunday morning's matches, unfortunately weather would prevent the Highlanders from competing in their remaining matches in the doubles final and singles semifinals.

This weekend's tournament concludes Fall tournament play for the Highlanders. With the Fall season now in the review mirror, the team will turn its focus to the spring season in 2023.
