CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Capping a strong season in the middle of the Highlanders' defense,
Shelby Hernandez has been named Big South Libero of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The junior defensive specialist played all seven sets across a 3-0 win over USC Upstate and a 3-1 win against Gardner-Webb this past weekend, helping Radford finish out the year on a three-game win streak that brought their BSC record to 8-8.
Hernandez tallied 16 digs, four assists and a service ace on Friday night before upping her game to the tune of 21 digs, five assists and three service aces on Saturday. She ended her junior campaign with 420 digs, 60 assists and 25 aces overall.
Hailing from Lochbouie, Colo., Hernandez is the first Highlander to be awarded Libero of the Week since Katelyn Meeks earned the honor on Nov. 10, 2008. From 2009-2019, the Big South chose a Defensive Player of the Week and Grace Green – on Aug. 27, 2018 – was the last to earn that award.
