RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team put on a defensive clinic against Averett on Wednesday night, setting a new record in a 79-34 victory on Carilion Clinic Court at the Dedmon Center.
The Cougars (2-2, 0-0 ODAC) scored just 34 points on 15-for-62 shooting (24.2%) which marks the lowest output of any Radford opponent ever. The previous record was held by Bridgewater, who came to the Dedmon Center and tallied just 40 points on Nov. 12, 2019.
Radford (2-2, 0-0 Big South) forced 12 Averett turnovers while racking up eight steals and a season-high seven blocks. Averett's top scorer on the night, Bryson McLaughlin, was held to eight points.
Souleymane Koureissi stepped up on the offensive end for the Highlanders, going 4-for-5 from the floor for a season-high 11 points.
Kenyon Giles continued his torrid start to the season, leading all players with 14 points and a season-best five rebounds.
Thanks to a trio of threes,
DaQuan Smith gave Radford another double-digit scorer in the game with 13 points. His push-the-tempo style of play helped the Highlanders earn a 15-to-1 advantage in fast break point.
Averett played hard from start to finish, possibly taking the Highlanders by surprise when the game was tied 5-5 several minutes in. Radford responded quickly however, going on a 20-4 run and never looking back.
KEY STATS
- D'Auntray Pierce made his Highlander debut, checking in with 16:34 to go in the second half. He immediately led the team with two blocked shots.
- Shaquan Jules didn't record his third double-double of the season, but he was solid nevertheless with nine points and six rebounds
- Radford shot 50.9% from the field and 81.0% at the free throw line
- 10 of the 11 Highlanders who saw the floor made at least one field goal

Now done with their November home slate already, the Highlanders hit the road beginning with a neutral site contest with Army West Point in Williamsburg, VA. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday, Nov. 20 and tickets will be available for $10 each on the day of the game.
