Radford Checks in at Third Overall in First Big South Sasser Cup Standings Update

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference revealed a first look at the 2022-23 Sasser Cup standings on Wednesday afternoon, with the Radford Highlanders checking in at third overall, averaging 7.45 points.

In the women's all-sports standings Radford is currently in second place averaging 8.25 points thanks to high finishes by women's soccer (10.25), women's cross country (8) and volleyball (6.5). For the men's all-sports standings, Radford currently sits in fifth averaging 6.25 points led by men's cross country's (7) strong finish to the season and men's soccer (5.5).

Radford coming in at third is no surprise after a successful fall for the Highlanders. Headlining the five sports in regular season action was the women's soccer program who rallied to win five straight matches to secure the Big South Tournament title, the eighth in program history. Radford defeated Gardner-Webb 3-0 in the championship match and advanced to face second-seeded Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The women's and men's cross country programs also had another great fall season to contribute to the Highlanders' standing. The women's cross country team placed third at the Big South Championship led by Chloe Wellings' third-place overall finish. The men's cross country team also finished fourth at the conference Championship led by Clay Kelly who was the first to finish for the Highlanders.

The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser (1989-96) and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League's 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport.
