Radford In Second Place After First Day of 2023 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – With one of the greatest single-day performances on the indoor track in program history, the Radford women's Track & Field team stands in 2nd place with 39.5 points at the 2023 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships.
 
The trio of Kandace McIvor (2nd place, 3017 points) , Maddie Wright (4th place, 2729 points), and Johniece Jones (5th place, 2478 points) got the day started in a major way, racking up 17 combined points in the pentathlon.
 
McIvor is just the seventh Highlander to ever surpass the 3,000-point mark in the indoor pentathlon, placing her name in the record books for all-time top 10 in the event.
 
Adding two more points to the team's championship total was Dezmajia Carter, who leaped a personal record 5.45 meters in the long jump to place seventh.
 
Parker Goldstein added to Radford's success in the jumps, taking fourth place and another 4.5 points in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters.
 
Jaslyne Robinson put up a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, running a 8.975 to advance to Saturday's finals.
 
Joining Robinson on Saturday will be reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, Raichelle Cornelius. The rookie ran a 56.92 in the 400-meter dash while Julia Burkley just missed out on qualifying with a PR of 58.92 seconds.
 
Over in the 800-meters, MacKenzie Gardner earned herself a spot in the finals with a time of 2:19.17, setting up for a huge second day.
 
Parlaying their success all season long into one of their biggest meets of the year, the distance runners came up huge.
 
The Highlanders gained eight more team points as Chloe Wellings (3rd place) and Rachel Millirons (7th place) recorded times of 16:50.04 and 17:40.60 respectively in the 5,000-meter run.
 
Closing out the day in style was another eight points in the Distance Medley Relay. Kate McLearen, Julia Burkley, MacKenzie Gardner, and MegAnne Gilmore crossed the finish line in 12:12.34, the fourth-fastest time in program history.
