Men's Basketball Locks Down No. 2 San José State In 67-57 Win, Advance To CBI Semis

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Lockdown defense and clutch shot-making were the keys to success as the Radford men's basketball team knocked off No. 2 San José State, 67-57, in the CBI Quarterfinals inside the Ocean Center on Monday evening.

Ranked top-100 in the NCAA NET rankings entering the day, the Spartans were held to just 35.7% (20-for-56) shooting from the field, including a below average 33.3% (8-for-24) clip from beyond the arc. After winning their first-ever postseason game on Sunday, their season comes to an end at 21-14.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders improve to 21-14 overall and advance to the CBI semifinals where they'll face the winner of No. 3 Charlotte and No. 11 Milwaukee. In Head Coach Darris Nichols' second season at the helm, Radford has won multiple postseason games in a single season for the first time in program history.

Although the Spartans took a narrow 28-26 lead into halftime, the two sides had nearly identical first 20-minute performances. Radford grabbed a 14-10 lead, but SJSU went on a 12-0 run to go ahead. Back-to-back baskets got the Highlanders back on track, setting things up for an exciting second period.

It was then that the men in red and white separated themselves from the competition. Radford raced out to a 40-34 lead behind a 12-2 tear and kept the momentum going throughout the final 20 minutes. A San Jose State three-ball made it a four-point game with 3:42 to play, but the Highlanders hit four of their last five attempts while preventing a Spartan field goal to find its mark.

DaQuan Smith led the team with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals while Josiah Jeffers stuffed the stat sheet with five points, seven boards and six dimes.

Shaquan Jules and Bryan Antoine had 10 points each, but it was Kenyon Giles who shined the brightest as nine of his 11 points came in the second half thanks to some incredible jump shots.

The Spartans were paced by Omari Moore, who contributed 17 points, five assists and four rebounds.

KEY STATS
  • Jules went 5-for-5 in the game and is now 13-for-13 in two games at the CBI
  • Radford committed just six turnovers while forcing 12 by the Spartans
  • The Highlanders also controlled the boards, out-rebounding SJSU 40-to-35
  • 34 of Radford's 67 points came in the paint
