Tight Game Doesn’t Go Highlanders Way Against Longwood

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program came up just short in a tight affair Thursday afternoon in a game against Longwood that finished with a 4-2 final score.
As has been the theme for the Highlanders as of late, the squad got off to a quick start after a scoreless first inning thrown by starter Chloe Greene. After Lexie Roberts reached off an error, Cori McMillan immediately cashed in with a slow-rolling triple through the right side of the infield.
Already up 1-0, Radford didn't slow down as Abby Wilson hit a ball to the right field warning track that gave McMillan more than enough cushion to come home and score to make it a 2-0 lead. Rachel Smith also drew a walk, but the inning would end from there.
Greene would keep up the pace in the second inning striking out a pair of batters and retiring the side. Cassi Barbato would collect a lead-off hit in the bottom of the second and be replaced by pinch runner Kyndall Stanley, but she'd be stranded at second base.
In the bottom of the third Radford had another great scoring opportunity. McMillan reached thanks to another error, but a bad luck double play cleared the bases. Smith hit her team-best seventh triple of the season but would be stranded keeping the game at a 2-0 score.
Longwood would strike for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to take their 4-2 lead and eventual final score. Malorie Reeves entered the game in relief in the sixth inning and was excellent for the Highlanders putting forth a pair of strikeouts in her scoreless effort.
UP NEXT
Radford and Longwood will resume their series on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. with a Senior Day ceremony to kick things off shortly before game one. Radford will be honoring their seniors Skyler DeHart, Abby Wilson and Laura Thompson.
