SPARTANBURG, S.C. —The Radford women's tennis program began their fall slate this past weekend at Wofford for the Big Southern Shootout. Other teams competing in the shootout included Gardner-Webb, Longwood, Wofford, Campbell, Western Carolina, and Chattanooga.
The Highlanders welcome back an experienced group of athletes, headlined by senior Julia Abrams, who returns for her third year at Radford.
On Friday, the Highlanders competed in singles competition against Western Carolina. Sophomore Michaela Stephens stole the show, dispatching her opponent 7-5, 1-6, 11-9.
Radford took full advantage of doubles play on Friday as well, defeating Chattanooga in two separate doubles matches. The duo of Julia Abrams and Lexi Smolder handled their opponents 7-6 (6). Michaela Stephens and Brooke Murphy also took care of business, winning 7-6 (4).
Saturday was another fruitful day for the Highlanders, especially in doubles, with Abrams/Smolder and Stephens/Murphy sweeping their Western Carolina competition. Abrams/Smolder winning 7-6 (6) and Stephens/Murphy dominating 6-1.
Singles action on Saturday was another impressive bright spot for Radford against Campbell. Abrams clawed her way to victory 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. While Smolder defeated her WCU opponent 6-2, 6-1.
The Shootout concluded on Sunday, with Smolder earning another victory this weekend in singles with a win against her Chattanooga opponent 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Up next, the Radford women's tennis team will travel to Charlottesville for the ITA Regionals from Oct. 17 through Oct. 22.
