Early Lead Not Enough in Series Finale Loss at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford softball program led early but wasn't able to hold on in their weekend series finale at USC Upstate Sunday morning in a 9-1 final.
The Highlanders got off to a solid start in the Sunday morning meet-up scoring the game's first run. Abby Wilson would start things off with a single and advance to second on a wild pitch. A groundout moved her to third and after Abby Bossler drew a walk it was Rachel Smith who came up with the two-out RBI for the 1-0 lead.
USC Upstate responded with two runs off their first homer of the day in the bottom of the first to take the lead back at 2-1. The Highlanders' offense wasn't able to string together many more opportunities in a game that was eventually shortened to five innings due to run-rule.
USC Upstate got a run in the third to go up 3-1 and then exploded for six runs in the fifth for the 9-1 final line. The Spartans take the opening conference series against the Highlanders. Radford's next Big South action will be in a couple weeks when they host Winthrop during the weekend of March 29th.

UP NEXT
Radford returns to action this upcoming Tuesday, March 19th for a nonconference doubleheader with Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). First pitch is currently set for 3 p.m. with action streaming on ESPN+.
