Pair of Close Singles Matches Not Enough in Loss at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's tennis program opened Big South play Thursday afternoon against the preseason favorites Charleston Southern falling in a tough final 7-0.
In doubles play, the Buccaneers got the early 1-0 advantage with wins on all three courts. In singles, the Buccaneers took home wins on courts one, two, three and five to clinch the final result.
On court four, Lexi Smolder got off to a hot start winning a tiebreaker 7-6(5) before ultimately falling in the back two sets in a tiebreaker. Brooke Murphy also battled strong, forcing a third set before also falling in a tiebreaker 1-6, 7-5, 0(8)-1.
The Highlanders return home next Monday for a special match featuring the inaugural International Students Day match. Radford will host Salem for a 2 p.m. first serve.
