Highlanders Upended at #25 Virginia

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program fell to a tough #25 Virginia squad Tuesday afternoon 6-0 in nonconference midweek action.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders would earn an early baserunner in the first thanks to a walk by Cassi Barbato, but the Cavaliers would work through for the scoreless first frame. Virginia plated one off a fielder's choice to take the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Van Beuge would pick up Radford's first hit of the evening in the top of the second while Peace worked a scoreless bottom half of the inning. A trio of runs would come home in the third to push Virginia's lead to 4-0.

Radford would strike for a pair of hits to put runners on the corners in the fifth down 5-0. A caught stealing ended the inning as Virginia would add one more to its lead in the bottom half to go ahead 6-0.

In the final frame, Atkins would rope a two-out single to left to try and help the Highlanders avoid the shutout. Radford wasn't able to cross home, however, as Virginia held on in the 6-0 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders are preparing for another pivotal Big South series this weekend when they host Winthrop for three games. First pitch is set for Friday, April 18th, at 4 p.m. with all the action streaming on ESPN+. Saturday's doubleheader will also play host to the Highlanders' senior day festivities.
